Mary Pat Frey introduced us to Rob Bell's Flannel.com videos (Formerly found at Nooma.com). Mary Pat works for the Diocese of Cleveland, and housted our Catechists' Day meeting last August. She brought with her this fabulous video called "Rich". It outlined how we, as Americans, are so wealthy that we don't realize how the rest of the world lives. It was a thought provoking experience for the PSR teachers, NTV advisers, RCIA/RCIC leaders, and Confirmation team members.
We were so impressed by the video that we explored more of the same at
www.Nooma.com
. For $10.00 per video, we had a real life portrayal of the challenges we face as Christians in a world of consumerism and instant gratification.
The teens have enjoyed the videos and the discussions that follow. Our May video was called "Tomato". It dealt with the tempation to maintain the status quo. What we hid behind so we are safe. We decided that the skin of the tomato keeps the good stuff inside safe from the outside world, just like the habits we have formed keep the "real us" safe from the world we know. Our image, our safeguards, and our false fronts are set up as walls that separate the "real us" from the rest of the world. In the end, we followed Mr. Bell's advice and made SALSA from the tomatoes we held in our hands during the video. It was lovely.
